A Carlisle man has appeared in court after a collision on a city road between a van and a pedestrian who was left seriously hurt.
The prosecution told Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this morning hat police had received a report, on Sunday, January 4, in the afternoon about an injured man on Prescott Road, Longsowerby.
A Fiat Scudo Van was said to have been in collision with a pedestrian, who was transported to one hospital and then transferred to another in a “critical” condition.
“He is still in hospital,” George Shelley, prosecuting, told a district judge. “He is intubated at the moment.”
In the aftermath, police said the van had been recovered and stated that a 29-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
At the Carlisle court today, Ricky Lee Wayne Murphy, 29, of the city’s Ferguson Place, appeared in the dock. He faces two charges.
Court papers show that one charge alleges that Murphy wounded a man with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.
A second, linked charge alleges that Murphy drove a blue Fiat Scudo van dangerously and caused serious injury to the man.
Murphy spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
During a court hearing lasting less than five minutes, Murphy entered no plea to either of the two charges.
One of the allegations — that of wounding with intent — is classed a indictable only and so serious that it can only be heard at a crown court.
Murphy’s case was formally sent to Carlisle Crown Court by district judge Philip Holden. Murphy is due to appear there in front of a judge, for a plea and trial preparation hearing, on Wednesday February 4.
In the meantime, he was remanded in custody. No application for bail was made by defence solicitor Chris Toms.
