A popular former Workington Town prop forward Gavin Brown has died at the age of 75.
Although he only played 11 first team games for Town, with another as a substitute, he was a mainstay of the A team during his time at Derwent Park.
He had joined Town in July 1978 from Broughton Red Rose after he had also played for Broughton Moor, Seaton and Cockermouth.
His last appearance for Town was a memorable derby win over Carlisle in April 1982 and after another season in the A team he was released from his contract as the club disbanded its second team.
A player who always gave 110% on the field, one particular game stands out among supporters of the time.
It was against Doncaster at Derwent Park and when he crossed the try line he waved over Johnny Jones to complete the touchdown.
Jones was the leading try scorer in the League at the time and that gave him his 32nd try of the season.

At the end of that season he was presented with two trophies – one for that selfless decision to give Jones the try, awarded by Aspatria Supporters for exceptional sportsmanship and the other as Town’s Clubman of the Year.
As well as being a capable front row forward, the tough as teak steelworker, was also a useful goalkeeper for Marsh Boys Club in the local Sunday League.
Gavin served his time as a blacksmith at Solway Colliery before working as a fitter and then a rigger at the steelworks in Workington.
One former team-mate said: “Gavin was a gentle giant who would do anything to help anyone, sometimes to his own detriment. He will be sadly missed.”
He leaves a wife Linda, two daughters Martine and Angela, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
