A bid for 163 new homes in a north Cumbrian village are set to be thrown out by planners.
Gleeson Homes wants to build the new estate in Houghton, near Carlisle and its application will be discussed by Cumberland Council’s planning committee tomorrow, Wednesday January 13.
It wants to build the homes on 7.9 hectares on land off Brunstock Lane.
It attracted objections from 339 people and Stanwix Parish Council.
Objections included concerns over traffic safety, housing density and its appropriateness for the village.
Natural England noted that a white-clawed crayfish survey was due to be undertaken and said suitable mitigation measures would need to be put in place if the surveys indicated the presence of this species on site.
Officers have recommended refusal of the scheme because the perception of the site was one of open countryside and not well contained or integrated into the village and Gleeson Homes has failed to demonstrate an overriding need for the additional housing to be sited in the location.
