Schools across West Cumbria have shown outstanding support for Marathon Man Gary McKee as he continues his 100toLDN challenge in aid of Hospice at Home West Cumbria.
Since beginning the challenge in January, Gary has completed a marathon every day while also visiting more than 20 schools, delivering inspirational talks and running with pupils to encourage them to stay active and support local causes.
Despite already covering 26.2 miles each day, Gary has made time to meet thousands of young people, sharing his story and highlighting the importance of determination, resilience and community spirit.
Schools have organised fundraising activities and got involved in running sessions alongside Gary.
Beckermet Primary School has raised more than £1,000, Montreal Church of England Primary School has contributed £2,400 and Frizington Primary School has raised almost £1,000 to support Hospice at Home West Cumbria.
Gary’s 100toLDN challenge finishes at the London Marathon on April 26 alongside his son, Beau, with the aim of raising £100,000 for the charity.
The challenge forms part of Gary’s wider ambition to reach £1 million in total fundraising for Hospice at Home West Cumbria.
Gary said: “One of the best parts of this challenge has been spending time with local schools.
“The energy and enthusiasm from the pupils have been brilliant, and it’s been great to see how keen they are to get involved.
“Even after a marathon, running with the children and hearing about their fundraising efforts gives you a real lift.
“The amounts raised by schools so far have been incredible, and every penny makes a difference for Hospice at Home West Cumbria.
“It’s inspiring to see young people supporting such an important local cause and learning how small efforts can add up to something really meaningful.”
Hospice at Home West Cumbria provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care, supporting people and families facing some of life’s most difficult moments.
Hayley McKay, director of funding and communications at Hospice at Home West Cumbria, said: “Gary’s dedication continues to inspire everyone in our community and seeing local schools rally behind him has been really heart‑warming.
“The enthusiasm and generosity shown by pupils, parents and staff reflect the very best of West Cumbria.
“Their support not only encourages Gary but also makes a real and lasting difference to the families we care for.
“We’re incredibly grateful for every mile run, every penny raised, and every young person who has chosen to support Gary and Hospice at Home West Cumbria.”
