A new Coastguard helicopter base has opened at Carlisle Lake District Airport.
Previously, when people were in trouble in Cumbria, Coastguard helicopter crews had to be sent to help from Prestwick in Scotland or Caernarfon in Wales.
Now, a helicopter will be based in Carlisle seasonally, operating from now until September.
It follows the successful launch of a seasonal base in Oban last month.
HM Coastguard said: “The bases add modern facilities and additional search and rescue helicopters, helping crews respond faster in areas of highest demand.
“These peak demand areas have been identified based on search and rescue data, especially linked to outdoor leisure activity.”
The service runs daily from 9am to 9pm and the aircraft can be airborne in just 15 minutes.
Chief Coastguard Paddy O’Callaghan said: “HM Coastguard is a modern frontline emergency service that continues to be equipped and ready to respond when it’s needed the most.
“We’d encourage people to enjoy the summer safely, including when they are visiting the coast.
“However, experience tells us that things can sometimes go wrong. That’s why we urge the public to remain alert to coastal hazards like tidal cutoffs, cliff falls, and mud.
“If you or others are in trouble at sea or on the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
Richard Jenkinson, airport director at Carlisle Lake District Airport, said: “We’re honoured that Carlisle has been chosen as one of the key locations for the new generation of Coastguard operations.
“It strengthens the UK’s emergency response network while also recognising Carlisle’s growing role as an aviation hub for the North.
“We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Coastguard and Bristow Helicopters to support this vital service.”
