International Workers Memorial Day was marked in Carlisle this week with a solemn public gathering in the city centre, writes Chris Jones.
People assembled at the Old Town Hall and laid wreathes at Carlisle Cross on Tuesday, April 28.
Organiser Craig Johnson said: ”International Workers Memorial Day is when trades unions across the world, but more and more in the UK, gather to reaffirm our commitment to health and safety at work.
“We are also commemorating those who have lost their lives at work, both in the UK and throughout the world.”
At noon, a minute’s silence was observed in remembrance of those who had lost their lives due to workplace accidents and industrial illnesses.
The ceremony continued with a wreath-laying, led by Carlisle mayor Jeanette Whelan and chair of the local Trades Union Council.
They were joined by a representative of Carlisle MP Julie Minns, civic dignitaries, trade union members, and community groups.
Special wreaths were also laid in tribute to workers lost in international conflict zones, laid by Carlisle-based Ukrainian photographer Veronika Zolotoverkha, those involved in community enterprise initiatives, and individuals affected by workplace-related stress and mental health challenges.
