Another player who spent time on loan with Workington Reds during last season has been released by his parent club.
Daniel Ogwuru, who joined Reds on loan from Morecambe and was recalled before the agreed spell was completed, has now been released by the relegated National League club.
It is the second successive demotion for the Shrimps who now find themselves in National North and 21 players from the first team squad, including club captain Yann Songo’o have been released.
Songo’o, who has amassed almost 170 appearances for the club over two spells, leaves along with winger Ben Tollitt, who featured 92 times for the club over the last two seasons.
The remainder of the players released were all signed by former manager Ashvir Singh Johal, with the exception of defender Kyle Jameson, who was one of two signings brought to the club by Jim Bentley in February.
Ogwuru, 21, who spent four years in the Manchester City Academy, scored three times in five games for the Reds and that prompted Morecambe to recall him early. His opportunities, though, were limited mainly to the bench from where he did score one goal.
He is the third player who joined Reds under Billy Barr who have subsequently released by their clubs.
Tyler Magliore, Barr’s first signing signed a short-term deal at Port Vale after impressing for the Reds and enjoyed being part of their exciting FA Cup run. But he has now been released by the Potteries club who have been relegated to League Two.
Luke Hunter, who was loaned to Reds from Fylde, was also recalled early after scoring twice for the West Cumbrians. He hardly had a chance, though, for the eventual National North club and at the end of the season was among those released.
Meanwhile Reds have revealed that Josh Galloway won’t be returning in June for pre-season training and has linked up with another departing Workington player Steven Swinglehurst at Gretna in the Lowland League.
