A Workington man has been jailed after subjecting his victim to a prolonged campaign of physical, mental and verbal abuse.

Sam Thomas, 44, of Winifred Street, was found guilty of one count of coercive and controlling behaviour, three counts of actual bodily harm and one count of intentional suffocation.

He was sentenced to five years and six months in prison following a trial at Carlisle Crown Court.

Cumbria police his victim had endured the abuse between April 1 2025 and October 24 2025, which they described as horrific.

Temporary Detective Constable Jodie Proctor said: “This was a sustained period of coercive control and physical abuse that had a significant impact on the victim.

“It can be incredibly difficult for victims of abuse to speak about what has happened to them.

“Any reports we receive will always be taken seriously and handled with care, professionalism, and sensitivity.

“Cumbria Constabulary works closely with trusted partner agencies to ensure people receive the right support, tailored to their individual circumstances.

“We will not tolerate offences of this nature, and we are committed to doing everything within our power to hold those responsible to account and bring them to justice.

“I would encourage anyone who has experienced these offences to come forward so our officers can investigate. You will be supported throughout the process.”
