A West Cumbrian credit union has been given a £3,500 boost by a national accountancy firm.
Whitehaven & Egremont and District Credit Union has been given the cash by MHA to help improve the financial literacy of less advantaged children in West Cumbria.
The donation is among five made to date this year by the firm’s MHA 1892 Foundation to charities and organisations across the North to support improved financial literacy among young people, a total donation of £17,500.
Whitehaven, Egremont & District Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial co-operative providing savings and affordable loans to residents in the local West Cumbria area.
It also works with organisations to provide financial advice to adults and young people.
Peter Tyson, chair, said: “We would like to thank the 1892 Foundation for their grant. It will support the delivery of our Money-wise support for local schools and youth groups in our local area. This, in turn, will significantly increase confidence and better management of money in the future.
“Our early intervention workshops help our young people understand the perils and pitfalls of debt as well as the importance of saving wisely and thrift.
Colin Johnson, partner at MHA’s Kendal office, said: “Making financial education accessible for every young person is vital to shaping a brighter future.
“It’s a positive step that the Government has recognised through much-needed changes to the national curriculum, but this will only begin in 2028. A broader range of solutions are needed and sooner.”
“Since the MHA 1892 Foundation was launched, we have supported a range of organisations helping young people from different cultures and backgrounds receive the support they need to better understand their finances by the time they reach adulthood.
“Whitehaven, Egremont & District Credit Union helps hundreds of young people every year across West Cumbria and we’re proud to be supporting its work through the MHA 1892 Foundation.”
The MHA 1892 Foundation was launched by MHA in 2023 as a pilot in the North West and, following its success, was rolled out nationally in 2025.
The MHA 1892 Foundation takes its name from the year MHA’s predecessor in the North West, MHA Moore and Smalley, was founded. Funds are generated through charitable initiatives by MHA staff, supplemented by match funding from the firm’s partners.
