Five people have been arrested during a road safety action day in West Cumbria.

Cumbria Police’s road safety operation, Operation Colossus, was in Cleator Moor, South Whitehaven and St Bees on Friday, as part of ongoing efforts to keep roads safe across the county.

Officers were out throughout the afternoon, stopping a number of vehicles and engaging with drivers to ensure they were complying with road traffic laws.

The operation focused on identifying issues which can put road users at risk, with offences dealt with including:

  • Driving without insurance
  • Vehicle defects
  • Using vehicles in a dangerous or unroadworthy condition
  • Drug and alcohol-related driving offences

One driver was arrested for failing to provide documents and driving without insurance. Two drivers were arrested for positive drug driving. A further two drivers had negative breath tests.

As well as enforcement, officers also took the opportunity to speak with motorists and offer advice around safe and responsible driving.

Sergeant Lindsay Stuart from Copeland Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Operations like Op Colossus are about making our roads safer for everyone.

“By being visible in our communities and carrying out these checks, we can deal with those who choose to break the law while also reassuring the vast majority of drivers who do the right thing.

“We’d ask anyone using our roads to make sure their vehicle is roadworthy and that they’re driving safely and responsibly at all times. Our work will continue across the area to help reduce risk and keep people safe.”
