Members of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue and Cllr David Malloy take delivery of the specialist rucksacks

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue has taken delivery of a set of specialist rucksacks, thanks to the Metalcraft Cockermouth Community Fund.

The rucksacks, designed by Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team and local company Atom Packs, are specifically designed for use by mountain rescue teams, allowing them to carry vacuum mattresses easily through demanding landscapes.

Tom Durcan, of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, said: “We’re grateful for the community fund’s support to purchase the rucksacks.

“We never know quite what we are going to come across when we are called to help, which means carrying a wide range of equipment on every shout.

“This can often be bulky and difficult to carry but, in rescue scenarios, time is of the essence, and as such we constantly strive to improve our kit.

“The lightweight design of these rucksacks makes it easier to carry equipment through difficult terrain and access that equipment quickly.

“This can make all the difference when it comes to reaching those in trouble quickly and getting them off the fells more safely and easily than before.”

Chris Duggan, managing director of Metalcraft, said: “We’re delighted to support the team at Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team by providing funding towards these specialist rucksacks.

“The team provides a truly invaluable service and these new rucksacks will make their lives a little easier while empowering them to provide even better care for the local community.”

The Metalcraft Cockermouth Community Fund was launched in 2020 to support local not-for-profit and community groups in Cockermouth.

Applications for the next round of awards closes on September 30. For further details or to make an application, visit https://metalcraft.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/cockermouth-community-fund-application-form.pdf
