Feast of fun with Mini Aceman

Ian Lamming assesses the latest EV from Mini, the Aceman

Things are definitely moving in the right direction.

The very first electric Mini I drove was great but only had a range of 90 miles. The latest – the Aceman – has more than doubled that, making it a much more practical proposition.

Its displayed range is accurate too and doesn’t seem to plummet at speed which gives you the confidence to take to the motorway and travel reasonable distances.

I got to Liverpool and back without charging so have no complaints. Even greater range would be welcome, of course, but I’m sure those days aren’t too far away.

The other things you can guarantee with a Mini is great design and heaps of hootin’ tootin’ fun behind the wheel.

I’ve never met a Mini yet that hasn’t been a riot to drive. They are the closest thing to a race kart and the Aceman is no exception.

It’s quite a big vehicle, nice an accommodating in fact, but it feels razor sharp and rapid, with amazing ride, steering, grip and handling.

It is just plain fun to be in with peerless dynamics. It is so likeable that it is easy to see why there is such brand loyalty. Few cars are as much fun as this to drive.

Swapping from another vehicle to the Mini, it really hits home just how good it is to drive. It takes pleasure from any journey – even tedious commutes along the motorway – because it feels just right.

Like all Minis, the interior is a feast for the senses. A dustbin lid sized centrally-mounted infotainment touchscreen includes satnav and excellent sound system.

There are delightfully tactile toggle switches and high quality fittings which make the Mini interior second to none.

The unique trim is also interesting on the eye thanks to textures and colours galore.

You will simply never be bored sitting inside a Mini Aceman and that is so rewarding given how many modern cars are plain and meh.

Specification is high too and every toy you could possibly want or need is there as well as a gamut of electronic wizardry to keep you safely on the road.

This particular Mini is an SUV, a five door crossover, but one designed to put some emotion back into motoring life.

With five doors, five seats and generous interior space, there’s plenty of legroom for passengers and up to 1,005 litres of boot space for shopping, suitcases or even pets.

Mini may imply small but it’s not and there are sturdy roof rails as standard, offering even more flexibility for weekend adventures, road trips and everyday errands.

It’s enough to make you forget it’s electric with that added complication of needing charging. Decent range and quick results at the charger mean you don’t give what can be a chore a second thought.

On reflection, I think the best way to describe the Aceman is endearing. Somehow it gets under your skin and into your blood.

The distinctly Mini lines will appeal to brand fans as will the attention to detail.

It’s shiny, it’s fun and it’s a hoot to drive. What more could you want?
