Barrow’s Furness General Hospital and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary have both reached their highest level of alert.
University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospitals, said both sites were extremely busy and its staff were working to cope with significant and growing demand.
The trust said: “You can help us during this time by using the right NHS service for your needs and only visiting A&E in life threatening and serious emergencies.
“If you are unwell and aren’t sure what to do, visit NHS 111 online for 24/7 advice.”
Patients are urged to continue to turn up for scheduled appointments unless they are contacted directly by the hospital.
Anyone who is no longer able to make their appointment is asked to let the trust know so it can be reallocated to another patient.
