
Families looking for ways to make the most of the school holidays can enjoy a summer full of adventure, creativity and outdoor fun at National Trust places across Cumbria.
The popular Summer of Play programme returns throughout the holidays, offering a packed schedule of family-friendly activities inspired by nature, history and the great outdoors.
From garden games and nature trails to treasure hunts, crafts and hands-on challenges, there is plenty to keep children entertained while encouraging families to spend quality time together in some of the county’s most beautiful settings.
With each National Trust property offering a range of activities, every visit promises something new to discover – whether it’s a hidden gem nearby or a much-loved local favourite.
This year’s summer programme includes:
Sizergh, near Kendal

Families can choose from different adventures this summer.
The popular Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Trail is in the woods, there is dressing up, garden games, seed sowing and music-making activities around the house grounds.
Young explorers can also follow the Wonder World: Earth trail to discover the fascinating hidden world beneath their feet, or join Jason from Get Active Club for family sports sessions including soft archery, boxercise and obstacles courses.
Allan Bank, Grasmere (July 4 to September 6)

Why not leave the car at home and catch the 555 to Grasmere to discover Allan Bank, tucked away above the village and surrounded by leafy parkland.
A great spot to escape the crowds and enjoy some shade on a summer day, families can play croquet, skittles and quoits on the lawn, get creative with printing activities in The Art Caravan, and enjoy loose parts play among the trees.
Hill Top, Near Sawrey

Step into the imaginative world of Beatrix Potter and discover the newly restored dolls’ house featured in The Tale of Two Bad Mice.
Families can enjoy character animations, hands-on play with a replica dolls’ house and hunt for mischievous needle-felted mice hidden throughout the house.
Wray, Low Wray (July 18 to September 1)

Let imaginations run wild with natural play, from classic lawn games and hoops to woodland adventures and paddling along the shores of Windermere.
Set against the backdrop of the exterior of a fairytale-like castle overlooking the lake, families can arrive by Windermere Lake Cruises or the Windermere Ferry before enjoying a scenic walk or cycle up to the grounds for a day of outdoor fun.
Whitehaven coast (Selected dates in July and August)

Free family play sessions will transform the seaside fields into a hub of activity with balance bikes, volleyball, badminton, sack races and more, all set against the stunning coastal backdrop.
Acorn Bank, near Penrith (July 18 to August 30)
A hidden gem just outside Penrith, this peaceful garden and woodland retreat is the perfect place for families looking to escape the crowds.
Children can discover traditional games, hunt for nature-themed rubbing plaques and enjoy a range of outdoor activities as they explore the gardens and winding woodland paths.
Bring a picnic to enjoy in the tranquil surroundings or relax with refreshments in the café courtyard.
Fell Foot, Windermere (All summer)
There’s plenty to enjoy at the lakeshore this summer, whether you’re a regular visitor or rediscovering a local favourite.
Children can let off steam in the adventure play area, follow the nature trail in search of hidden creatures and test their skills on the orienteering courses.
The meadow offers space for quieter exploration, while balance bikes are available to borrow free of charge.
For adventures on the water, Stoked Watersports offers paddleboard, kayak and rowing boat hire.
Please help care for this special place by leaving barbecues at home and taking all litter away with you.
Wordsworth House, Cockermouth (July 19 to August 26)
Bring along a favourite teddy or toy for a special Teddy Bears’ Picnic in the historic walled garden.
Families can enjoy a relaxed outdoor picnic while soaking up the atmosphere that inspired one of Britain’s most celebrated poets.
Summer of Play activities are included with normal admission unless otherwise stated, with the Whitehaven coast events free to attend.
National Trust members can enjoy free entry to most participating properties.
