Visitors to Taste Cumbria in Maryport next month will get a chance to see an international cycling trophy set to be presented to the host of the next Tour de France Grand Départ in 2027.
As part of the build-up to the Grand Départ coming to Cumberland next July, there is an opportunity to find out more about the Tour de France as part of a planned programme of Trophy Tour visits at the event on on Sunday August 9.
A Stage One finish in Carlisle and a Stage Two start in Keswick is confirmed for the 2027 Tour de France.
Set to be the largest free sporting spectacle in British history, the men’s Tour de France will begin in Edinburgh on Friday July 2 2027, with the opening stage finishing in Carlisle the same day, before stage two travels from Keswick on Saturday July 3 2027 through the Lake District and Lancashire to finish on The Strand in Liverpool the same day.
The Tour de France is the world’s biggest annual sporting event. The race attracts 10 to 12 million live spectators each year. It is broadcast on TV in over 180 countries and has a television viewership of 150m in Europe alone.
The 2014 Grand Départ in Yorkshire generated an estimated £131 million in economic benefits.
Darren Crossley, Cumberland Council’s director of place and economy, said: “The Grand Départ Trophy Tour will give visitors the chance to find out more about next year’s event. It will be part of the second day of the two-day festival in Maryport. Come along and find out more about the Tour de France.”
The Taste Cumbria events are organised by Cumberland Council.
This is the second Taste Cumbria event of 2026. Taste Wigton took place in April and the next festival will be in Cockermouth on September 26 and September 27. The Taste Cumbria Christmas festival ends the year in Cockermouth on December 5 and December 6.
The Taste Cumbria event will be the biggest Maryport food festival yet. It will take place on Saturday August 8 and Sunday August 9.
It will be held at the Marine Road Showfield and the Harbourside Event Space, which is part of Cumberland Council’s £12 million regeneration of the town.
The Demo Stage is on the Harbourside Event Space, which will also host The Teenage Market and live music on the Palace Stage.
Over on the Marine Road Showfield there will be the Producers’ Market, hot food court, the festival bar run by Maryport Round Table, the main music stage and children’s entertainment.
There will be hot and cold food traders and the chance to buy fish and seafood fresh from the Chelaris boat. Entertainment will include sea shanty bands, storytelling and roaming street theatre.
