Whitehaven’s Civic Hall has reopened.
The Lowther Street building was closed immediately on May 14 after issues were identified with the fire alarm system.
Inspections concluded that current arrangements needed to be improved.
Cumberland Council owns the freehold of the Lowther Street building and leases it to Rosehill Youth Theatre Trust which operate it, including its principal events space The Solway Hall.
The authority said the decision to temporarily close the building was taken jointly with the tenants so the work could be carried out.
Cumberland Council was issued with an improvement notice for Whitehaven Civic Hall relating to its asbestos management on April 20.
When we asked for clarification, Cumberland Council said while the building was closed due to the fire alarm issues, it was taking the opportunity to also address some of the asbestos-related issues at the venue.
Cumberland Council said they were separate issues.
A council spokesman said: “We’d like to thank the local community for their patience while these essential works have been carried out, and the building has been closed.
“Taking the decision to temporarily close the venue wasn’t one we made lightly but keeping staff, tenants and members of the public safe was our top priority.
“With the safety improvements now complete, we’d like to encourage Cumberland’s residents to support the venue and the events planned there over the coming weeks and months.”
