A lorry blaze has closed the M6 northbound near Tebay.

Police, the fire and ambulance services were called to the incident at around 7.35am.

The police confirmed there were no injuries to anyone involved.

A diversion has been put in place from Junction 36 via the A6. Police are telling motorists to expect long delays.

A police spokesman added: “Please avoid the area whilst the vehicle and the motorway are made safe.

“There are no injuries. Emergency services are still in attendance and the incident is ongoing.”

Traffic is being diverted via the hollow diamond diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M6 northbound at J36 and take the A590 westbound to the Brettargh Holt junction
  • Follow the A591 to Plumgarths Roundabout, and then take the third exit onto the A5284 towards Kendal
  • Follow the A5284 Windermere Road/Stricklandgate, turning left with all traffic onto A6 Sandes Avenue
  • Follow the A6 northbound out of Kendal towards Shap Toll Bar junction
  • At the junction, turn right onto the B6261 and then turn left and re-join the M6 northbound at J39 (Shap)
