[A] PICTURE postcard South Lakeland parish rich in farming heritage is set to pull wool over eyes in a ‘hide and sheep’ extravaganza.

Witherslack is hosting the wacky gathering on May 7 when the village promises a ‘bleat and baa’ bonanza with life-size models and a name guessing quiz.

Organiser Janet Read explained the event had been planned to raise money for St Paul’s church, but at the same time herald the twin parishes of Witherslack and Meathop’s long links with agriculture. There are currently 18 working farms.

She quipped: “We are always on the lookout for novel fundraising ideas and – without wanting to fleece anyone – decided to focus on sheep in a bid to find much needed cash for our church tower appeal.

“Across the village, people will be able to see some weird and wonderful constructions, including the odd Ovis aries scarecrow. The challenge will be to guess the name and, who knows, Dolly might just feature.

“We’re hoping our village will be rammed with visitors, who can enjoy homemade refreshments in Barwick Hall, a beautifully decorated church and even a woollen stall.”

Sheep-shape adverts are promoting the event, which runs from 10am to 4pm and promises plenty of family fun.
