The people of Carlisle came together to celebrate Armed Forces Day, recognising the dedication and service of the UK’s armed forces – past, present and future, writes Chris Jones.
Held in the city’s pedestrianised area yesterday, Saturday June 27, the event was organised by Cumberland Council with support from local armed forces organisations, bringing together military personnel, veterans, cadets and community groups for a day of celebration and remembrance.
A wide range of organisations attended, including the Cumbria Museum of Military Life, Lancashire Association Branch, Cumbria Army Cadet Force, Cumbria police, Age UK North Cumbria, Carlisle Sea Cadets, RAF Air Cadets, Solway Aviation Society, the Royal British Legion, Armed Forces Careers Office Carlisle, SSAFA Cumbria Branch, Carlisle United Sports Trust, RAF Spadeadam, the RAF Association, the Military Vehicle Trust, Sport in Action and Cumberland Council.
Wing Commander Matthew Lawrence, Commanding Officer of RAF Spadeadam, highlighted the importance of Armed Forces Day and the close links between the military and the local community.
He said: “It’s recognition of everything to do with military life – veterans, those currently serving, contractors, all the support organisations and their families as well.
“It’s a celebration of everything to do with the military and a wonderful opportunity to showcase what we do in the UK and here in Cumbria.”
Wing Commander Lawrence also reflected on RAF Spadeadam’s milestone anniversary.

“Spadeadam was a rocket testing establishment between 1960 and 1972 before becoming an army range for four years. In 1976 RAF Spadeadam was established, and this year marks our 50th anniversary. We employ local people to support and deliver electronic warfare training.
“The really great thing about Carlisle is the support we receive from local councils across the area. We were honoured to receive the Freedom of the City this year, and we value the close relationship between RAF Spadeadam and Cumbria.”

The day’s ceremonies were led by Carlisle’s Squadron Leader Tony Parrini MBE (RAF Retired), while visitors enjoyed live music from the Border Concert Band and an impressive drill demonstration by the Cumbria Army Cadet Force.
Carlisle MP Julie Minns was among those attending the celebrations.
The week’s commemorations concluded with a flag-lowering ceremony attended by civic representatives, including Carlisle mayor Anne Glendinning, the Lord-Lieutenant’s representative, and the president of the Royal British Legion’s Carlisle and Stanwix Branch and chaplain the Rev Keith Teasdale.
Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for communities across the UK to show their appreciation for the men and women who serve, have served, and continue to support the nation’s defence, while strengthening the bond between the armed forces and the communities they call home.
