[S]aturday evening at Derwent Park sees the Comets return to SGB Championship action when they take on the Redcar Bears as they go in search of more league points.
The Bears have had a major revamp over the winter with a new promoter and five new faces in their septet, and they now boast a top-three as good as any in the league.
Leading the Bears is the spectacular Jason Garrity, who has shown in the past that he knows how to ride Derwent Park with some thrilling race wins. Then, when you add former Comet Charles Wright and the all-action Ben Barker into the mix you have a formidable spear-head that should lead to some exciting track action when they face the Comets.
Wright and Barker have already shown form around Derwent Park this season when they finished second and third respectively in the season-opening Cumberland Open Championship. In addition the Bears have the up and coming Dane Jonas B Andersen filling one of their second-string berths so there will be plenty to keep the Comets on their toes.
The Comets go into the meeting on the back of two very encouraging performances last weekend where a 49-41 home victory over Newcastle saw their two-legged Knockout Cup tie end in a draw; forcing both legs to be replayed in the near future. Then, the following day the Comets travelled north to take on the highly-rated Glasgow Tigers where they were narrowly beaten 46-44 in a last heat decider, although in doing so they were able to pick up one league point to bring home.
Looking ahead to Saturday evening, club owner Laura Morgan is keen to see the side build on last weekend’s performances and she said: “Both of our matches last weekend saw some great speedway and a good team performance with everyone playing their part over the weekend.
“Craig continued the incredible form that he has shown so far this season but everyone else stepped up to the plate when it mattered and to be honest we were a little unlucky at times; so it could have been even better.
“But, those performances showed what we can do and we all believe that there is much more still to come from this team once we really get into the season; but the riders, management and supporters were all very encouraged by last weekend’s performances and now we need to keep that momentum going.
“Saturday’s visit of Redcar will provide another tough challenge and with their strong heat leader trio we will certainly have to be at our best once again if we are to take the points. But, we have said it before and we will say it again; there are no easy matches in the Championship and every point has to be earned in what is looking like being the most competitive season for many years.”
Following the league fixture with Redcar there will also be a six-heat Northern Junior League fixture, between the Northside Stars and the Redcar Cubs, with future Comet Kyle Bickley representing the Stars who, along with the Workington Meteors, are using Derwent Park for their Northern Junior League fixtures in 2017.
