[F]or year 10 and year 12 students, time is running out to apply for an opportunity to get a taste university life this summer. Sunday 28 May is the deadline for applications to join the summer university, a fun, three-day, two-night residential at the University of Cumbria designed to inspire, inform and raise aspirations for young people in the local area.
They will find out what it would be like to go to university, and be able to explore about subjects that interest them while meeting new people and gaining confidence.
The year 10 summer university runs from Monday 24 to Wednesday 26 July, and the year 12 one from Wednesday 26 – Friday 28 July. Both are based at the Fusehill Street campus, where as well as academic, team-work and personal development sessions during the day, students will also take part in various social events in the evening, including a mini gala dinner and disco. Overnight accommodation is in the university’s halls of residence on campus.
The idea behind the summer university, held every year, is to raise the aspirations of young people in Cumbria and get them thinking beyond sixth form by helping them to see the higher education opportunities available to them in the county. It also helps them decide if university is the right choice for them.
Successful applicants will be invited to a briefing event with their parent/carer and these events will take place as follows:
- Monday 19 June 2017 – University of Cumbria, Fusehill Street Campus, Carlisle and Furness College, Barrow
- Thursday 22 June 2017 – Energus, Lillyhall, Workington and Bowerham Road, Lancaster
The events will begin at 5.00pm with registration and refreshments and then the presentation will start at 5.30pm.
Schools will receive a list of students who have applied for their record.
The event is absolutely FREE to all students! This includes meals, accommodation and evening activities. The university also covers the cost of return transport from schools to the Fusehill Street campus if required.
