[A] Cumbrian coffee aficionado will be taking part in the regional heat of the UK Barista Championship this Saturday 20th May.

Mike Dickinson, 27 from Cumbria’s speciality coffee roasters, Carvetii Coffee, will be competing for a place in the semi-finals, which take place later this summer.

The UK Barista Championship is organised by the Speciality Coffee Association (SCA) and is the UK’s premier coffee competition designed to showcase current and innovative trends in the barista world.

This is the first year that the Championship has held a Northern heat, which will take place at Ancoats Coffee in Manchester.  Mike, along with 13 other competitors, will have just 15 minutes to produce three sets of four drinks consisting of espresso’s, milk beverages, and a signature drink.

The drinks will be judged on overall taste, as well as the barista’s passion and inspiration for speciality coffee.

Mike has been busy practising his art at Carvetii Coffee’s new premises in Threlkeld. Owner & co-founder of Carvetii Coffee, Gareth Kemble has previously taken part in the competition and understands the pressure involved. He said: “It takes a lot of commitment to enter a competition of this nature but it’s a great way to further your knowledge of coffee. Knowing the effort involved, we’re excited and proud that Mike is taking part and hope it encourages other baristas from our region to take part in the future as it all helps to increase awareness of speciality coffee.”

The finals of the UK Barista Championship will be held later this year with the overall winner going on to represent the UK in the World Barista Championship.
