[P]UPILS have received an insight into the range of opportunities working in local government at a successful careers event.

Five members of Copeland Council staff attended the World of Work Day, held at Whitehaven Academy, in which Year 10 pupils had the chance to quiz them about their roles.

Chris Pickles, Copeland’s Work and Skills Programme Officer organised the Council’s attendance at the event. He was joined by Dennis Barkes (from the Housing department), Claire Rudd and Clare Henderson (from Customer Services) and Elaine Watson (from Environmental Health).

Mr Pickles said: “It was a successful event and we were delighted to be part of it.

“We have such talented young people in Copeland, and we were asked questions about the attractions of working at the Council, the demands on staff, the skills needed and what a typical day involves.

“They wanted to know about the main access routes into careers here, and the usefulness of extra-curricular activities in terms of building their CV.”

Copeland Council was one of around 20 organisations present at the event.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “Local government is an exciting and rewarding place to work, offering a whole host of career opportunities, and I’m pleased we were able to share this at the World of Work event.

“We have a number of job vacancies currently open, and I’d encourage everyone to consider joining our team.”

Five of the Council’s staff have shared their varied experiences of working for Copeland. To read their testimonials, visit www.copeland.gov.uk.
