[P]olice are appealing for information after a beloved family pet was killed in a suspected hit-and-run collision.

Chocolate labrador Coco was being walked by its owner last Thursday (June 29) when it ran into the road near the junction of St Anthony Road and Belmont Street in Walker.

It was struck by a white Renault Captur at around 7.45am but the owner of the vehicle failed to stop and left the scene.

Coco was also hit by a red Vauxhall Mokka immediately after the first collision who has since spoken to police.

Coco was left badly injured by the collision and his family were left devastated when vets told them that the two-year-old pup would have to be put down.

Sadly they were left wiht no choice but to follow the vets recommendation and Coco passed away later that day.

Now police are looking to trace the driver of the white Renault Captur as part of their enquiries into the collision and are appealing for help from the public.

PC James Maguire, of Central Area Command, said: “We want to speak to the owner of the vehicle involved in this incident to establish the circumstances around this collision.

“It may be that the driver did not know they had struck Coco but we need to carry out the appropriate enquiries and to bring some closure to Coco’s family who are clearly devastated.

“It is a criminal offence to leave the scene of a collision without exchanging your details and so we would appeal for the driver to contact us so we can resolve this issue.

“Anyone who knows the identity of the driver, or saw the collision last Thursday, is also asked to contact police on 101.”

Coco’s owner, James Pederson, 23, said: “Coco was such a friendly dog who had lots of love to give, he loved to play with other dogs and his family adored him. We are all devasted that he has gone in such a horrfic way. We have lost our best friend.”

The driver, anyone who knows their identity or anyone who saw the collision take place is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 142 290617 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
