Carlisle Crown Court

[T]WO young men involved in a Workington mobile phone shop burglary have avoided being locked up for the crime.

Gaij Ray Murdoch, 19, and 21-year-old Scott Motum were sentenced by a judge at Carlisle Crown Court today (TUES) having admitted burglary.

Judge Barbara Forrester heard the Mobile Booth store had been left secure on the night of February 21. However, the owner returned the next day to find £4,665 worth of stock was missing, and a large amount of damage caused.

Forensic evidence linked Murdoch and Motum to the crime. Both men were said to have spent time in custody since the offence.

As a result, Judge Forrester gave Murdoch, of Vulcans Lane, Workington, a 16-week prison term, suspended for 12 months. He must complete unpaid work and a night-time curfew, along with rehabilitation and attendance centre orders.

Motum, of John Street, Workington – who admitted his guilt at an earlier stage – received a rehabilitation requirement and unpaid work.
