[T]wo departments at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust have scored perfect ‘10’s’ in the ‘Two Minutes of your Time’ patient survey.

Both departments are based at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven – the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and Ophthalmology department.

The ‘Two Minutes of your Time patient survey’ is just one of several ways the Trust monitors patient feedback to constantly improve services based on what is important to patients.

Georgia Wright, head of nursing for patient experience said: “Gathering feedback about a patient’s experience of the health care they receive from us is vitally important in helping the Trust to continually improve. That is why we are always encouraging feedback from our patients and their families on what they thought about the care they received and what they feel we could do to make the experience better.”

SCBU WCH L-R: Celia Braithwaite-Nurse, Donna Lawson-Nurse and Wendy Milburn-Health Care Assistant

100% of the respondents on the SCBU unit between April and July 2017 said they would be extremely likely to recommend this ward to their families and friends.

Some of the comments left by family members included: “Fantastic staff, who could not be any more helpful, kind, respectful and professional at their jobs.”

“Amazing staff, helpful and always felt welcome.”

“Amazing ward, staff do brilliant things for babies born at West Cumberland- don’t know what we would have done without all the staff.”

“Could not ask for better care. Thank you so much”

Feedback for the Ophthalmology department for the same time period had zero negative comments.

Some of those comments included: “Very welcoming and put me at ease. The music in the theatre helped me to relax.”

“Care and attention has been excellent”.

“Everyone was friendly, keeping me at my ease. Mr. Zaheen was brilliant and all staff.”

The five questions asked in the ‘Two Minutes of your Time survey’ are:

  • Overall, on this ward, were you treated with respect and dignity?
  • Were you involved as much as you wanted to be in decision about your care and treatment?
  • Did you receive timely information about your care and treatment?
  • In your opinion, how clean was the hospital ward or room that you were in?
  • Were you treated with kindness and compassion by the staff looking after you?
