Community Physiotherapy Team

[M]embers of the public are invited to have a free health and wellbeing check-up at a community health event in Barrow next month.

The event which has been organised by the local Community Physiotherapy Team from Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, aims to encourage people over the age of 60 to find out about how they can improve their own health and wellbeing, enabling them to stay well in the community.

Sue Clarke, Community Physiotherapy Team Lead said: “This event will give people the opportunity to find out how physical activity can enable them to stay as independent and healthy as possible. Physical activity helps people to live longer, live well and prevent falls- but this does not mean that everyone has to go to the gym! A few simple exercises at home can be the starting point to making positive changes to our health and well-being.

“The Community Physiotherapy team who are hosting the day are keen to offer advice and guidance to help people start making these changes!”

On the day, the team will be offering free health and wellbeing check-ups along with advice on how individuals can enhance their mobility and increase their number of active years. Additionally, health professionals will be on hand to look at attendee’s walking aids, to ensure they are appropriate and safe.

A number of health professionals will be at the event to provide information and advice including Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Podiatrists and Occupational Therapists.

Dr Geoff Joliffe, local GP said: “This event is a fantastic way to help local people to realise that they have the potential to live a healthier and more independent life within the community. Exercise and physical activity can make a huge difference to people’s lives and a few small changes can result is really positive results. We hope the day will encourage people to lead and take part in local groups and activities which promote health and wellbeing.”

The community event will take place at the Forum in Barrow-in-Furness on Wednesday 27th September. Members of the public are welcome to drop in at any time between 10am and 2pm.
