[A] series of free, guided mountain bike rides for women kicks off in Whinlatter Forest Park this Sunday, organised as part of British Cycling’s HSBC UK Breeze programme.

The rides will be led at the pace of the slowest rider, offering a great introduction to mountain bike riding and the opportunity for riders to build up their confidence on the trails in a supportive, women-only group.

Each of the four rides will be held at Whinlatter Forest Park, which is home to the longest purpose-built mountain bike trails in the Lake District, and will follow the centre’s gentler ‘Quercus’ route. Bikes are available to hire from Cyclewise Whinlatter, by calling 01768 778711.

Local Breeze Champion, Julie Labbett, volunteers with British Cycling to encourage more women to cycle, and has organised the series of rides. Julie will be on hand to offer support, tips and encouragement while leading the rides on the day.

Sonia Dryden, Active Forest Coordinator for Whinlatter Forest, said: “We’re delighted to host this series of HSBC UK Breeze rides, and it’s fantastic to see free guided rides for women which encourage more women to give mountain biking a go.

“The Breeze Champions are very friendly, so you’re guaranteed to make new friends and discover just how fun mountain biking is – as well as the stunning scenery here at Whinlatter. It would be amazing to see more women come along and join in.”

HSBC UK Breeze is the biggest ever programme to get more women riding bikes for fun and fitness, and a key part of British Cycling’s vision to get one million more women cycling by 2020.

Julie Labbett, British Cycling Breeze Champion, said: “These rides are the perfect place to start for women looking to get into mountain biking in a really friendly and supportive environment.

“It’s a brilliant way to meet new people and stay fit, and here in the Lake District we’re lucky to have some of the best trails in the country to hone your skills on.”

The rides will take place on:

  • Sunday 17 September, 10:00 – 11:45
  • Sunday 24 September, 10:00 – 11:45
  • Sunday 1 October, 10:00 – 11:45
  • Sunday 8 October, 10:00 – 11:45
