HRH The Duchess of Gloucester welcomed to the academy by students

[O]n Tuesday 26th September students and Staff at Workington Academy excitedly welcomed Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester – who was arriving to mark the official opening of the new Workington Academy building – and was received by HM Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman.

The academy, which is one of six schools sponsored by not-for-profit education charity, Cumbria Education Trust (CET), was completed earlier this year and although only fully operational since February, its new facilities and improved learning environment have already made a significant impact on student progress and morale.

Presentation by head boy and girl

After being introduced to assembled dignitaries, the Interim Headteacher, Mrs Collette Macklin and the Chief Executive of CET, Mrs Lorrayne Hughes, The Duchess of Gloucester was greeted by the head boy and girl and deputy head boy and girl.

Speaking on behalf of CET, the Local Advisory Board, staff and students, Mrs Hughes said: “We are delighted and honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester to Workington Academy and have the opportunity to showcase this wonderful new building.  We hope that she has gained a favourable impression of this fantastic new learning environment along with the commitment and dedication of all our students and staff.

The royal party, escorted by Mrs Hughes, then made their way into the main building for a tour of the new facilities.  During the tour, the Chief Executive of CET, Mrs Hughes explained about the history of the academy, its plans for future development and the aims and aspirations the Trust has for its students.

En-route Her Royal Highness spoke to a number of staff and students as they engaged in their lessons and projects.   Of particular interest to The Duchess of Gloucester was the Metal Monsters project in the Design & Technology department.

Following the tour of the academy, Her Royal Highness was accompanied by the Royal Party into the hall where she was treated to a musical performance.

Mrs Hughes offered her thanks and appreciation to the Royal Party and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester.  A presentation of a picture of the local area was made to The Duchess of Gloucester who was then invited to unveil a commemorative plaque and sign the academy’s visitors’ book to officially record this auspicious occasion.
