[E]den District Council has welcomed Mike Craig as its new Building Control Officer.

Mike brings with him over 20 years of experience in Building Control. He join the Eden team from Carlisle City Council, where he served as a Building Control Officer for 13 years. Prior to this Mike worked with Eden District Council, during his initial tenure with us Mike was educated and trained as a Building Surveyor.

Mike aged 52, lives at Long Marton near Appleby with his wife. He said: “I started my Building Control career with Eden District Council over 20 years ago, I spent seven years here, before trying something new and moving house and job to work for Carlisle City Council.

“I have been made to feel really welcome since returning to work at Eden and it has been nice to see some familiar faces. The standard of construction in the area is really good, the local contractors are well established and it is nice to work with the same companies regularly.”

Mike is a Chartered Member of the Association of Building Engineers and holds an Honours Degree in Building Surveying from Northumbria University.

Alaistair Richmond, the Eden District Council’s Building Control Manager said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Mike back into the Eden District Council fold, he will work alongside our existing Team who provide a quality, responsive, affordable and not for profit Building Control Service to the residents of the District.

“Mike’s return has a welcome synergy about it as Eden District Council invested the time and money sponsoring Mike’s training as Building Surveyor when he served with us originally.”

Each year, Local Authority Building Control in Eden District receives and deals with around 700 building regulations applications. These can vary from replacement windows to housing sites with hundreds of new homes to large commercial buildings. By obtaining professional advice and working with tradesman with the recognised industry qualifications the public can be reassured their building works are carried out to the appropriate standards.

Eden District Council’s Services Portfolio Holder, Councillor Adrian Todd, said: “Nationally there is a shortage of qualified Building Control Officers, so we are delighted to welcome someone with Mike Craig’s experience and qualifications to the Council’s Building Control Team. We have a great team of officers in Building Control, who are committed to providing and delivering a quality service to the public. The Council has a proud track record of investing in the training and developing of Building Control Officers, with Alaistair Richmond, Darren Russell and Mike Craig all good examples of this positive approach. I wish Mike all the best for his career with Eden.”
