[T]o remember those who gave their lives in WW1 there will be a two minute silence at St Andrews at 11.00 on Saturday 11 November and a special addition the community gardeners are planning for this year.
People will gather at St Andrews churchyard where the WW1 memorial is located from 10.30 for the two minute silence at 11.00 on Saturday 11 November. This year the Rev David Sargent will say a short prayer before the silence. North Lakes school are placing ceramic crosses around the memorial there at a special schools’ gathering on Thursday 9 November.
The Community Gardeners will hand out 200 crosses, each one containing the name of someone who gave their life during the Great War.
After the two minute silence the people gathered will be invited to take the crosses down to the border at the front of the Royal British Legion Club in Middlegate. Each year we remember those who gave their lives by seeding wild flowers in our corner of Penrith. Here Rev David will say a prayer and the crosses will be placed around a wooden cross above a mock trench. The crosses will stay in place for a couple of weeks and then be stored until wildflowers appear again.
Helping to coordinate the placing of the crosses is Community Gardener, Joan Robinson. She said: ”We invite people to attend this commemoration. It will be an emotional occasion as each person will be invited to remember the person named on the cross they are holding.”
