[U]niversity Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) is asking for the public’s help to celebrate the shining stars across its hospitals, as it launches its sixth annual Health Heroes awards.

The awards are a chance for the Trust to formally recognise the talent and commitment of staff, volunteers, governors and fundraisers across its hospitals – Furness General Hospital, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Westmorland General Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

To ensure that the Trust celebrates all those individuals or teams that have made a real difference to patients, colleagues and the wider community, nominations are being sought not only from staff inside the hospitals, but also from patients, visitors families, neighbouring health and social care organisations, and members of the public.

The Trust is asking for the public’s help in nominating individuals or teams in each of the following 8 categories:

  • Excellence in Patient Safety Award
  • Outstanding Improvement in Patient Experience Award
  • Going the Extra Mile Award
  • Student / Trainee of the Year
  • Leader of the Year
  • Innovation and Research Award
  • Inclusion and Diversity Award
  • Bay Health and Care Partners – Transformational Change Award

Jackie Daniel, Chief Executive, UHMBT, said: “Our staff awards are always one of the highlights on the calendar for me, and I am really pleased to formally launch this year’s Health Heroes awards.

“Whilst the senior leadership team and I do get the pleasure of speaking to staff individually and thanking them for what they do, there is something really exciting and uplifting about celebrating together. These awards are our way of finding those staff amongst us who deserve a special thank you for all they do, and I have no doubt that you all know exactly who we should be recognising. That’s why I’m asking for your help. We have made a number changes this year such as a new award to recognise the fantastic work taken place across all local Health care providers, transform healthcare for the benefit of our local populations and provide sustainability for the future.

“If there has been a particular staff member or team that has made a difference to your life or that of a friend or family, please take the time to nominate them so we can thank them more formally.

“The awards not only allow the Trust to say thank you to staff, volunteers, governors and fundraisers, but it also gives the staff who are nominated and those that are crowned the winner, a real sense of pride.”

Andrew Bennett, Chief Officer for Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group said: “I am delighted that the Trust is inviting nominations for a new category which recognises the transformational work taking place across all the Bay Health and Care Partner organisations working together in this area. There are many individuals and teams working hard to make our local services as good as they can be. I encourage all our partner organisations to seize this opportunity and to make their nominations early in what is likely to be highly prized award.”

Nominations close on 22 December 2017. Three finalists will be selected for each category. The nominator will then be invited to present in front of a panel of judges, where the winner will then be decided. The nominator will be provided with a PowerPoint template to use at the judging panel if they wish. The awards ceremony will then take place on Friday 23 March 2018, at the Lancaster House Hotel.

Pearse Butler, Chair, UHMBT, said: “From walking around our hospitals and talking to staff and patients, it’s clear that we have a workforce that is committed to doing its best for our patients. These awards also celebrate the vital work of the Trust’s volunteers, governors and fundraisers, who are essential to the running and continuous improvement of the Trust’s hospitals.

“We believe, that with your help, we can make these awards a real success that truly celebrates the talents of our staff across Cumbria and Lancashire.”
