Students ready to handover the boxes

[S]tudents, staff and families of St Benedict’s School in Whitehaven have helped make some children very happy for Christmas, by taking part in the Shoebox Appeal for local charity, Convoy Aid Romania.

In total, ninety shoe boxes were collected and picked up by the charity last week. They will now be sent on to children in Romania who live in extreme poverty. These children would otherwise not receive anything gifts over the festive period.

Convoy Aid Romania (CAR) is a small local charity run by unpaid volunteers on a non-political, non-religious and purely humanitarian basis. This charity has been collecting in West Cumbria for over 22 years.

Mr Teasdale, Lay Chaplain at the school organised the collection:

“The staff and student response has been fantastic, to see so many of our students wanting to help and willing to make a difference to another child’s life is truly heart-warming.”

Children at St Benedict’s helped Mr Teasdale with the collection, and also wrapped boxes and wrote out Christmas Cards to go inside the boxes. This is the first time that the school has taken part in this type of appeal.

Items donated included toys and Christmas cards for the children, as well as everyday items such as toiletries, clothing and food items.
