[P]ast students from St Benedict’s Catholic High School, have this evening attended a special awards ceremony to mark their success whilst at the school.

The awards ceremony, held at Whitehaven Golf Club showcased those high achieving Year 11 students who received their GCSE results in the summer. The evening recognised not only academic achievement but also students’ contribution to the wider life of the school.

Awards handed out covered Academic Excellence; Outstanding Progress and Outstanding Effort & Achievement in all subjects. Guest speaker Brian Hough, Socio-Economic and Stakeholder Manager from NDA presented the awards.

Mr Hough stated: “I was so pleased to be asked to be involved in the Awards Evening. Campus Whitehaven and other education and skills projects I’ve worked on are all about supporting young people to reach their potential. Recognising their achievements not only rewards today’s students but can also encourage tomorrow’s.”

Ian Smith, Headteacher at St Benedict’s commented: “This is one of the highlights of the school year in which we recognise and celebrate the endeavours of Year 11.”

Sponsors were also in attendance from Morgan Sindall and James Fisher who both sponsored the STEM Awards and arranged work experience for their winning students. Along with Wates Construction who sponsored the Wates Industry Award, and will also be welcoming the winning student for some work experience later in the school year.

The award was presented by Mr Simon Humphrey, who stated: “Wates are delighted to be supporting St Benedict’s School and celebrating the outstanding achievements by students in this year’s GCSE results. We look forward to welcoming the student to site for one week’s work experience with the Campus Whitehaven site team.”

New awards for this year included an Attendance Award, and also a Resilience & Ambition Award, which recognises success as a result of determination and resilience, something which is not measured in formal examinations.

Full details of the winners can be found on the school website at www.st-benedicts.cumbria.sch.uk
