Kendal woman sentenced for assaulting three police officers

[A] Kendal woman has been sentenced for assaulting three police officers in the town on ‘Festive’ Friday.

Harriot (Hattie) Crawford, of Park Street, pleaded guilty to assault, and drunk and disorderly behaviour at Barrow Magistrate’s Court yesterday (January 17th).

The 26-year-old kicked and punched the officers in the early hours of December 23rd 2017, on Finkle Street, while being arrested.

She was being arrested for being drunk and disorderly after refusing to leave the area while police were trying to give first aid to another member of the public. It was during this arrest that she struck a police officer with the handcuffs, causing minor injuries to his face.

While being taken to a police van she deliberately kicked a further two officers.

Crawford was given a 12 month community order with 120 hours unpaid work, ordered to pay a total of £275 compensation and £85 court costs. Kendal Bar watch separately imposed a 12 month ban.

Chief Inspector Matt Pearman said: “Every day and night our officers come to work to help people, and it is despicable that they face this type of assault as they carry out their work.

“The last Friday before Christmas is always a busy night and behaviour of this type spoils the enjoyment of others. I am pleased that Crawford has been brought before the courts in relation to this incident, and that she was found guilty.

“It is not acceptable to treat the police in this way, and this case demonstrates that police and the courts will not tolerate it.”
