Give me sunshine – Workington are denied another goal by Craig Rule’s acrobatics in the Netherhall nets (Martin Perty)

[I]n the Smurfit Kappa Cumberland County League there was the last of the four  Conway Cup Quarter Finals, and Cleator Moor Reserves progressed into the next round after an important 0-2 away win at Wigton Harriers, thanks to two goals from Ryan Hall. Cleator will face Workington Athletic and Carlisle City Reserves face Aspatria in the Semi Finals. In the Ken Glover Memorial Shield Quarter Finals, Borough won 2-0 against Gosforth, with the Borough goals from Andrew Marshalsea and Lee Wolfe.

In the Smurfit Kappa Premier Division, Aspatria are now equal on points with leaders Wigton (and with a game in hand) after a close 3-2 win over Silloth. It was the Seagulls who took the lead and the visitors were 0-1 up at half time. But then Mally Graham got two for Aspatria and Aspatria’s Andrew Trestianu scored the third against his former team for a win. The Seagulls goals were from Nico Watt and Kieran Little.

Carlisle City Reserves moved into fourth spot with a 5-1 win over Cockermouth, whose pre-Christmas run of good form seems to have run out of steam. A hat trick for Reece Robinson and two goals for Jack Baker did the damage. Luke Graham scored Cockermouth’s only reply. And Netherhall lost 0-3 to Workington Athletic at the Lakes College 3G pitch. Matthew Perry scored two and there was a goal for Marc Messenger as the Workington lads continued with their winning ways. Athletic are now in third spot with games in hand, Silloth now sixth, Netherhall seventh and Cockermouth eighth. It looks like the champions will be one of the current top three – Wigton, Aspatria or Workington.

In Division One, Pirelli are now seven points clear at the top with a game in hand over Gosforth after a 2-0 win over Whitehaven Miners with Jono Simpson and Aaron Roberts grabbing the goals for Pirelli. Whitehaven Amateurs are in fifth place after a 2-0  win over Windscale, with the goals from Rob Carr and Tom Palmer.
