[A] MAN was warned he faces a lengthy prison sentence for “explosive violence” inside a Whitehaven town centre pub.
Mark Quigley, 43, pleaded guilty to one crime when he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today (MON). Quigley admitted unlawfully and maliciously causing Ryan Burns grievous bodily harm with intent. The charge arises out of an incident at the Yellow Earl, Lowther Street, late on December 30.
Police said at the time they were called at 11-42pm to a reported assault. They said a 39-year-old man had suffered “serious, non-life threatening head injuries”.
The court heard today the attack had been captured on CCTV, Judge James Adkin speaking of “explosive violence” being demonstrated on the footage.
Kim Whittlestone, defending, said Quigley was “extremely shocked by what he saw on that video”, and added: “He himself is searching for an answer as to why he behaved in the way he did that evening.”
Judge Adkin adjourned the case for background information, including a psychological report, to be prepared. Quigley, of Hillcrest Avenue, Whitehaven, was granted conditional bail, and is due to be sentenced at the crown court on February 23.
But Judge Adkin told him: “You know what the sentence is going to be: prison; it is just a question of how long.”
