[A] man has been hurt after his car crashed down an embankment, landing upside down on the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line at Brampton.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to the incident at 3:55pm.

A spokesman for GNAAS said: “We arrived on scene within eight minutes of the call.

“The doctor and paramedic team assessed and treated a patient, aged in his 20s for back and shoulder injuries before handing him over to an NWAS land crew, who transported the patient to hospital in Carlisle.”

His injuries are described as non life-threatening.

National Rail Enquiries said: “There is an obstruction on the track at Brampton (Cumbria) and this has resulted in disruption for trains travelling between Newcastle and Carlisle.

“All lines are currently blocked in both directions through Brampton, and therefore train services may be cancelled or revised.

“Disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Cumbria Police on 101.
