[T]alented students from St Benedict’s school showcased their magnificent Rock Challenge performance, along with other Cumbrian schools, at Carlisle’s Sands Centre last Friday (20th April).
Seventeen Cumbrian schools took part over two days at Carlisle. Whilst fourteen schools will be competing, Cumbria is also home to three Premier Division teams, including St Benedict’s.
St Benedict’s along with Whitehaven Academy and West Lakes Academy all showcased their performances, as they have retained their status as Premier teams. They have all automatically qualified for the Northern Premier Final at Grimsby Auditorium, which takes place in June.
St Benedict’s performance, entitled Outbreak, tells the story of a rare monkey, captured in an African rainforest, and sold to a London zoo keeper… Unbeknown, the monkey carries a deadly virus!
Within hours, an outbreak sweeps rapidly across the city, and the government threaten to destroy the capital to avoid a pandemic. In the race against time can Dr Richards find a cure before the city is destroyed?
The performance was given the following awards of excellence at the event:

- Drama
- Concept
- Soundtrack
- Visual Enhancement
- Entertainment
- Set Design and Function
- Stage Crew
- Video Design
- Lighting Design
As well as these awards, four outstanding students also gained special recognition by winning The Sir John Hoddinott Award. They were:
- Anna Cockbain
- Izabella Sloan
- Stephanie Holburt
- Will Bragg
This award is for a group of students who have shown outstanding endeavour in the production of their performance, and was nominated by Mrs Scott, Performing Arts teacher at St Benedict’s: “From my perspective, I could not be more proud of Anna, Stephanie, Izzy and Will. They have endeavoured to ensure that all of our students enjoy a positive Rock Challenge experience. They have recognised the benefits of good leadership and they have also created pathways for other students to now take on key leadership roles within the team- something that I feel very strongly about. Reflecting on their wholeheartedness, I feel truly privileged to have had the opportunity to work alongside some incredibly talented young adults. I could not think of a more deserving group to nominate for The Sir Hoddinott Award for Excellence.”
The whole team are now back into rehearsals for the Northern Premier Final at Grimsby on 30th June.
