Cumbria police are urging people not to speculate after a social media post has begun circulating alleging that a serious incident took place in Carlisle.
Officers said they were aware of the post, which relates to an alleged sexual offence.
They said they have carried out enquiries and, at this time, the force had received no reports or information to substantiate the claim.
Cumbria police added: “We understand that posts of this nature can cause concern and anxiety within the community, especially when they relate to such serious matters.
“We would strongly encourage the public not to share or speculate on unverified information.
“Misinformation, particularly relating to incidents of this nature, can cause significant distress within communities.
“If there is a genuine risk to public safety or a confirmed incident, updates will be provided.”
Anyone with information or who wishes to report a crime is encouraged to contact police on 101.
