Copeland MP joins industry leaders in nuclear discussions

[T]he MP for Copeland has joined government officials and industry leaders in providing insights into the future of energy in the North of England.

Trudy Harrison MP joined a cross-party panel of northern MPs and industry leaders for a roundtable event to discuss the findings and recommendations of the Northern Energy Strategy report.

The strategy, launched in October last year by the IIPR North and the Northern Task Force details a future vision for an energy economy across the North, estimated to be worth £15bn and creating 100,000 jobs by 2050.

It outlines the North’s potential to be a leader in low carbon energy for the UK; a global hub for research and innovation from academia to entrepreneurial start-ups; a pioneer of new and innovative energy solutions from smart grid technology, through to large scale low carbon heating and transport systems.

Mrs Harrison, said: “I was pleased to speak about the future of low carbon energy generation and delighted to welcome local representatives from Centre of Nuclear Excellence, Britain’s Energy Coast and The Herringbone Consultancy.”

The strategy is closely aligned with the government’s Industrial Strategy White Paper, which recognises the importance of innovation and economic growth through new technology, as well as the need to invest in infrastructure, affordable energy and clean growth, and the need to build on local strengths to deliver benefits to all regions of the UK, amongst other priorities.

The Northern Energy Taskforce has spent the past 15 months collaborating with energy sector leaders, and reviewing national and international evidence about the north of England’s role in the global energy economy.
