[T]he new Mayor of Workington was declared as Cllr Barbara Cannon at a ceremony held in the Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre on Wednesday 9th May 2018.
Cllr Cannon confirmed her chosen charity for the year as Hospice at Home and said ‘it’s a great pleasure and a privilege to be asked to serve as Mayor a second time. I was Mayor in 1992 and Workington is a very different place now. It was a lovely evening and I’m thrilled that Hospice at Home could be there as a choir. It’s a great cause and I’m sure people will join me in backing them as my Mayoral Charity.’
Cllr Cannon will carry out the role of Mayor until May 2019 following on from her predecessor, Cllr Ann Bales.
Cllr Denise Rollo was announced as Deputy Mayor and Mrs Pamela Graham, The Mayor’s sister, as Mayoress, who will support the Mayor in her duties throughout the year.
The ceremony included a speech from Cllr Bales during which she reflected on her term in office and a successful year of fundraising for charities Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Team Isla, via The Rainbow Trust, who were each given a cheque for £1790.
Evelyn Adams M.B.E was announced as Cllr Bales’ ‘Volunteer of the Year’ and was awarded the Volunteer’s Shield. Mrs Adams has been running the ‘Christmas in Company’ event for 28 years, an event which brings together people from the town and beyond who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day.
