[I]nnovative Nuvia apprentices have been recognised for their work by Copeland’s MP at a special awards presentation in Parliament.
This week, Trudy Harrison MP welcomed a group of Nuvia Apprentices to London to present The Outstanding Contribution Award to 2nd year Quality Apprentice, Victoria Derbyshire and 3rd year Mechanical Apprentice, Daniel Walsh.
The award recognises the pairs’ work as part of the annual Big Bang Conference, an event aiming to encourage young people to study subjects in science, technology, engineering and maths.
After being approached by Sellafield to produce an activity for children at last year’s Big Bang event, Victoria and Daniel came up with a virtual reality activity of Nuvia’s involvement on the Sellafield Ltd Stack project.
Apprenticeship Ambassador, Mrs Harrison, said: “It was my absolute pleasure to invite Nuvia’s apprentices to the Houses of Parliament, to hear from them about the benefits of being an apprentice.
“Gaining a degree without debt – on the job experience and university education, is the way forward as far as I’m concerned. The young people I met were a credit to their company, clearly excited to work in the nuclear sector and working hard to inspire the next generation. I commend Nuvia for leading the way with such a variety of placements being offered.”
Working closely with Sellafield Ltd, both Victoria and Daniel spent their free time lobbying support for their creation, testing and developing its software and meeting with stakeholders in a bid to promote the project.
Nuvia bosses are now looking into how the apprentice’s virtual reality software could be incorporated into more aspects of their work.
