[A]t 12:20pm today, Tuesday 29 May the volunteers at St Bees RNLI were requested by UK Coastguard to assist a 27 foot sailing vessel.
The 27 foot sailing vessel was under sail off St Bees Head and heading towards Whitehaven Harbour when the yacht suffered engine failure. The solo yachtsman had called the Coastguard to asked for assistance to navigate into Whitehaven.
The volunteer crew quickly located the yacht and towed it into the harbour were they met by members of Whitehaven Coastguard.
Dick Beddows St Bees Lifeboat Operations Manager said ‘The skipper on the yacht did the right thing by calling for assistance before the situation became too difficult for the lone sailor.
