Cadi Catlow

[K]irkby Stephen Community Arts presents Animate!, a full day stop motion animation workshop on Tue 31 July with renowned animator Cadi Catlow.

Cadi is a versatile animator who started her career in Kirkby Stephen as part of 3 Bear Animations, making award-winning claymation and animation commercials and short films with her sisters, Linnhe and Bryony. In 2004 Cadi started out on her own, working first on the Harry Potter and Children of Men films. She has animated a range of techniques – claymation, traditional puppet, origami, real objects, 2D rostrum, pixellation.

Stop-motion is a technique in which objects are physically manipulated by the animator in small amounts between individually photographed frames. When the sequence of frames is played back it gives the illusion of the objects moving independently – a bit like a flick book but with real, 3D objects. Well known and equally well loved examples would include Wallace and Gromit, Bob The Builder, and Morph, but this technique was also used to create special effects before the age of digital graphics, in films like Jason and the Argonauts (1963).

Over the course of the day, Cadi will take you through the process of constructing a simple, yet imaginative storyline, and will be working from recycled and reusable materials to help you create your very own animated masterpiece. Camera angles and basic lighting techniques will also be covered, and your finished film will be available to download via email after the workshop.

Cadi’s other credits include Rastamouse and BBC’s OOglies.
