[F]irefighters from Egremont Fire Station have received national recognition for their great charity fund-raising efforts.

They have been named runners-up in the national Team of the Year award category at the Fire Fighters Charity (FFC) Spirit of Fire Awards 2018.

Three members of staff from Egremont Fire Station and their partners, supported by Cumbria County Council’s Chief Fire Officer Steve Healey, attended the awards ceremony in London on Thursday 21 June. Afterwards they visited No 10 Downing Street for a post-awards reception hosted by Home Secretary Sajid Javid.

The team from Egremont Fire Station were shortlisted for the award in recognition of their tireless fund-raising work. In total, the team has raised nearly £6,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity last year alone.

They are one of the most successful fire stations in the UK for fund-raising, especially when it comes to textile recycling. They have twice won the FFC’s annual clothing and textiles recycling competition nationally, collecting 11 tonnes in January 2017 alone.

The Egremont team also runs a Santa’s grotto, routinely puts on charity car washes and supported firefighters and fire personnel affected by the Grenfell Tower fire by climbing Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, in full fire kit.

Steve Healey, Cumbria’s Chief Fire Officer, praised the team’s efforts, saying: “The whole team at Egremont Fire Station do terrific work supporting the Fire Fighters Charity and they fully deserve this national recognition for their superb fund-raising efforts.”

The Spirit of Fire Awards celebrate the inspirational achievements and support that the FFC has received from individuals and teams throughout the country.

The charity provides a range of support services, including rehabilitation, recuperation, psychological and nursing, for the fire and rescue community nationally.
