[P]OLICE are working with Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service to establish the circumstances of a large fire that occurred at Lillyhall.

Police received a report of a fire at the former Alcan site at 10.49pm yesterday (4th July).

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and both the police and fire service are conducting enquires to establish whether there are any suspicious circumstances.

The site contains high levels of asbestos and police are urging anyone that was on the site to consider seeking medical attention.

Detective Inspector Matt Scott said: “We are working with the fire service to establish the circumstances of last night’s fire and to identify any potential causes.

“During initial investigative work it has become clear that the site contains high level of asbestos which could be harmful to those that have been in close proximity. I would urge anyone that may have been on the site to seek medical attention.

“There is no suggestion that last night’s fire would cause any ill-health to the wider public.

“If anyone has any information on last night’s fire I’d urge them to get in touch.”

A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “At 10:47pm two fire engines from Workington were mobilised to a commercial building fire on the A595 Lillyhall in Workington.

“On arrival at the scene a request was made from the scene for a further two appliances and two fire engines from Whitehaven were also mobilised.

“The fire involved a factory which was well alight.

“Crews used two hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus to fight the fire.

“Crews were on scene approximately two hours.”

Anyone with any information is asked to email [email protected] or call 101, quoting incident number 295 of the 4th July. Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
