[A] £multi-million redevelopment, providing new employment opportunities, has been proposed in Carlisle.
The Gateway 44 site is located adjacent to Junction 44 of the M6.
Carlisle City Council is undertaking consultation with existing occupiers of the adjoining Kingstown and Parkhouse Industrial Estates seeking their views on the proposed development.
The City Council – through its appointed property managers, Chancerygate – is proposing plans for a 40,500 sq ft retail warehouse scheme which would target bulky good retailers. The project would also feature a drive-through food outlet. Prior to submitting a planning application, the council is canvassing opinions. The proposals would generate circa 100 retail jobs and 30 temporary construction jobs and be complete by December 2019.
Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr Colin Glover, said: “This development has the potential to be an important asset for the council which will generate significant long-term income for Carlisle and provide new employment opportunities. It is a major investment and we appreciate consultation feedback before taking the next steps.”
Chancerygate Development Director, Mike Walker, added: “Since our appointment by Carlisle City Council as Development and Asset Managers for the Kingstown and Parkhouse estates, we have been looking at the development potential across the location.
“This scheme would complement the existing retail offer and would not compete with the city centre, as it would target ‘bulky goods’ retailers. Whilst we are not yet at the planning stage, we are very encouraged by the level of occupier interest that there already is in the scheme.”
The Kingstown and Parkhouse Estates cover in excess of 200 acres and are home to more than 140 international and national businesses that employ over 2,000 people.
The consultation will be undertaken by Savills who are the appointed as planning consultants for the scheme.
The redevelopment proposals are subject to council and planning approval.
