[A] talented carpentry apprentice has showcased his skills in a regional construction competition.

Ben Dixon, a Level 3 apprenticeship in Site Carpentry and a CITB student at Furness College, recently triumphed in the heats of SkillBuild.

During the contest at York College, apprentices were tasked with setting out, marking out and constructing a traditional hipped roof – skills that Ben had honed during his time in the workshops at Furness College’s Channelside campus.

SkillBuild, delivered by CITB, is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices. The contests comprises of regional heats and a national final held later this year.

Jim Rawnsley, a Lecturer in Construction at Furness College, said: “Ben is an absolute star. He is incredibly skilful and had completed his Skillbuild project an hour before everyone else in his heat.

“He’s a very talented tradesperson and he’ll go far in his career.

“Everyone at Furness College wishes Ben the very best for the national final.”

During his three years at Furness College, Ben has won the SkillBuilld Junior Regionals and came first in the Senior Regionals for the past two years.

Ben, who is employed by Samuel Sheldon Ltd, has the potential to compete at the national final which could lead to a place at a WorldSkills final in the future.
