[T]wo more Professors of Practice have joined the University of Cumbria, adding to a growing roster of industry professionals who students can look forward to hearing and learning from.
Marc Seale, chief executive of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) will join Toby Rowland, one of the army’s most senior healthcare leaders, in providing fresh insight and expertise at the university.
Professors of Practice are experts in their field, recruited to enhance the curriculum, experience and environment provided for students and staff. They will join existing Professors of Practice (PoP’s) Graeme Danby, Valerie Reid and Keith Partridge who work within the university’s Institute of the Arts.
“I am delighted and honoured to be appointed as a Professor of Practice by the University of Cumbria,” Marc Seale said. As chief executive of the regulator that oversees the training of healthcare staff he is ideally placed to pass on the latest developments in this area at a university that is heavily involved in training health professionals of the future.
Mr Seale added: “I look forward to working with the academics in the various departments that are responsible for educating and training the future generations of health care professionals. I also welcome the opportunity to meet the students studying at the university and to explore with them how they will work as professionals in the healthcare delivery system.”
With twenty years’ experience as a senior military healthcare leader, Toby Rowland has provided medical support on operations and deployments worldwide. Not only has he been closely involved in the development of medical skills and facilities around the world, Mr Rowland has pursued a research career with posts in leukaemia research and commercial biotechnology.
“It is an incredibly exciting time to be involved with the University of Cumbria and I am very much looking forward to seeing how my experience as a military healthcare leader and civilian research scientist can contribute to life at the university,” Mr Rowland said.
It is hoped both will be able to contribute within the forthcoming academic year.
“We are delighted that Marc and Toby have joined our university as Professors of Practice, helping to strengthen further the links between academia, research, and industry,” Vice Chancellor Prof Julie Mennell said. “Not only will they will make a significant contribution to the delivery of our University strategy, which places a strong emphasis on meeting current and future skills needs in the region, they will also be involved in activities such as curriculum design and delivery and student mentoring. By bringing industry experts to work in collaboration with the university, means our students gain even more real world experience from those who are actively involved at the highest level.”
